United Health Group, Uniprise Technologies (09/2003-05/2004)
This part of United Health Group caters to large-scale companies with 5000 employees or more. The division takes the companies through a process that begins with Request for Pricing of health care services and continues to serve the employees of those companies through claims processing and support. A core competency of this division is large scale processing. Much of this health care benefit and plan data is stored on large legacy systems that have been acquired through mergers over the years. The project involved moving the data from the legacy systems to relational databases, creating webservices to allow access to this data, and creating GUI front ends to display the data to United Health Group employees.

Designed and developed a Java front end to connect to the above mentioned webservices. This front end used STRUTS and STRUTS Tiles technology as well as Java Server Pages (JSP) to achieve functionality. The application took the XML returned by the webservice and translated it into html by using XSL stylesheets.

Gathered requirements from business users regarding core functionality of the application. Converted these requirements into necessary deliverables and gathered signoff from the necessary parties.

Using Castor technologies, translated XML plan data in relational database structure. Using business rules, developed application to perform a translation on the extracted data.

Project Highlights:

  • Project completed on schedule and within budget
  • First time the division successfully used XSL with XML for presentation

Skills Utilized: Java, J2EE, JSP, IBM Websphere Application Server, IBM Websphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD), DB2, Clearcase, Struts, XML, XSD, JUNIT, Webservices, JMS

Accenture - Project: Launch-Now (10/2000 - 9/2003)
This Accenture service provides competitive local telephone exchange carriers (e.g. ATT&T Consumer Services, Ztel, Comcast) a means to port local phone service from an incumbent local telephone exchange carrier (e.g. Qwest). This is a multi-tiered system that uses technology such as EDI, CORBA, C, a proprietary C++ business rules syntax, Java, and PERL to connect with the different telephone companies. Each one of the incumbent local exchange carriers has a set of provisioning rules which Launch-Now normalizes into functional business rules for the provisioning order.

Designed, developed, and maintained a web based toolset that assisted users with order management (system fallout, rejects) and order entry. Managed lifecycle phases of analysis, general design, detailed design, coding, unit test, and assembly test for the interface for seven (7) releases. This toolset was built using Java, PERL, CORBA, and Oracle. Acted as a informal team lead to other developers working on this toolset. Supported weekend release activities for system upgrades. Estimated and tracked change requests and product upgrades. Worked with offshore resources to maintain a stable low cost product.

Completed functional analysis of upgrades and change requests for the Launch-Now application. The deliverables from this process were passed on to the general design and coding team to complete in an offshore environment.

Performed analysis of complex system problems. These problems included anything from start to finish in the provisioning process or in other words these. Analyzed issue, documented problem and implemented fix.

Project Highlights:

  • Hired on from contractor for hire position (beat 30 other contractors out for position)
  • Order Entry system a major breakthrough decreasing a new client's time from signing on to sending orders by 30%
  • Acted as subject matter expert (SME) for website and java

Skills Utilized: Java, J2EE, JSP, UNIX, Apache Tomcat Servlet Container, Apache Web Server, Oracle, Clearcase, XML
